Educating tomorrow’s stewards today, is key for developing an ethos of stewardship and ensuring a future for wild Pacific salmon. That’s why education has long been a part of the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s community granting efforts. We have long supported various curriculum programs including DFO-created Salmonids in the Classroom and the Stream of Dreams art and watershed education program. We have also supported the engagement of school and youth groups in the building of rain gardens throughout Delta.
The growth of PSF’s scientific activities, particularly through the Marine Science Program, has created an opportunity to build-out our science-based education and outreach. The PSF Marine Science Program is working to create outreach products in the form of newsletters, educational materials, rack cards and signage to inform the public about our work.
We have created a number of educational modules in the form of videos, class templates for teachers and activities for students. These materials can be found on the LEARN tab of the PSF.CA website.
Some example products include a video describing salmon life cycles by PSF biologist Sam James, and a video of a pink salmon dissection that teaches students about the external and internal biological structures of both female and male fish by PSF biologist Nicole Frederickson. We also have flyers, games and colouring sheets for younger children.
